Is it okay to not want a baby shower?

By admin

Baby showers can be amazing for some families and parents-to-be. It’s a time for families and friends to gather together and celebrate this new joy that will be entering their lives very soon.

A baby shower has activities, games, food, and a wonderful venue.

However, for many reasons, some moms just don’t like the idea of having a baby shower, and this is completely fine.

You might think that you have to have one because other people you know did, or because everyone around you is telling you that you need one. Although, despite what everyone else is saying, it’s entirely your choice.

Either way, if you’re unsure about having a baby shower, we are here to help you to decide.

Below are reasons why you might not want one:

You have time to focus on other things

Having a baby shower is stressful, and it can take up precious time when you could be doing something else, like getting your baby’s bedroom finally finished or packing your hospital bag.

It takes up a lot of time with all of the planning, and of course, the actual baby shower going to.

A lot of the time, baby showers aren’t hosted by the mom-to-be, but they do tend to give their opinion or help out when really needed.

It is recommended to start planning your baby shower 3-6 months before it happens, which means, you find out you’re pregnant and you’re planning straight away.

Then there’s the stress of finding a venue in the months and seasons that you’d like, and then you have to actually attend the baby shower.

It’s a lot, and it’s completely okay if this is the reason why you’d rather not have a shower.

Your health might not allow it

Growing a human being can be tiring, and it really does eventually take its toll on health.

Just because your best friend had a perfect pregnancy with little to no morning sickness, or had an endless supply of energy up until the due date doesn’t mean that you’re going to experience the same thing.

So, why would you spend so much time planning and prepping, stressing and sorting when you might not even feel well enough on the day anyway?

You may even be on bed rest, which means that it wouldn’t even be worth throwing a baby shower within your home.

If you’re not feeling up to it, then your and your baby’s health comes first, listen to your body, and take some time away.

There is a limited time

Baby showers tend to happen in the second or going into the third trimester, but by this time, you might be just finishing getting the nursery ready, or spending some well-deserved alone time with your partner before your baby arrives.

Pregnancies don’t actually last long, and before you know it, the time flies and you’re sitting next to the crib watching your baby snooze.

If you’d rather spend time at home then you’re fully entitled to, and it’ll really help you bring yourself to zen before the baby arrives.

Don’t feel guilty if you’re not able to commit to time with anyone other than your partner.

You don’t need anything

It sounds quite selfish when you think of it but we all know that on any occasion, whether it’s a birthday or Christmas, you’ll receive gifts that you don’t need or want. It’s the same with baby showers.

You’ll be given gifts that you’ve either already got, or just don’t see the point in having.

This will lead to the hassle of having to return items, gifting them to other new moms, or simply throwing them in the trash. If you don’t want to stress about doing this, then simply don’t throw a baby shower.

If you don’t like being the center of attention then the last thing you want is… to be the center of attention.

You don’t like being the center of attention

It is your baby that guests are going to be celebrating and because they aren’t born yet, it’ll be you that the attention solely goes on.

It can be uncomfortable when you’ve got eyes watching your every move and hands coming towards you to grasp your bump, especially if you’re not a hands-on person.

If you know that you’re going to be uncomfortable with the amount of attention you’re bound to receive, then don’t throw a baby shower.

Even though right now you feel as if you don’t want a baby shower, you might just need some reasons as to why you should be throwing one. So, we’ve collected together a list of reasons why you should.

You deserve it

You’ve spent 8/9 months carrying and feeding a baby in your stomach. You’ve gone through possible morning sickness, swollen ankles, tiredness, and cranky moods.

You definitely deserve to have a couple of hours celebrating all that you’ve gone through.

You deserve to have special memories with those that you love and to remember the effort that went into making such a day for you.

You get to see everyone

During your pregnancy, you might not have seen people as much as you’d like to.

There’s a time when we go off on maternity, so we miss our work colleagues, and because we have all of this free time, we realize just how busy everyone else is.

However, having a baby shower means that you’ll have everyone in the same place as you, and you actually get to socialize.

It may also be the last time you see people for a good while, as within a couple of weeks, you’ll have your hands full with attending to a baby.

You get offered advice

You might have friends or family members that have already been through what you’re currently going through, and during pregnancy, there may have been times when you felt really unsure or as if you needed some advice.

Now everyone is together, this gives you ample opportunity to ask away!

It’s a common feeling to be nervous during your pregnancy, and it will continue through motherhood. Any questions about during or post-birth that you have lingering in your brain can be asked now, and it’s a great way of settling your mind.

Getting the items you do need

Even though there are times when you might be given gifts you really don’t like or need, it works the other way around too.

You could get gifts that you really need or didn’t even think of buying. It might be wise to set up a “wishlist” for guests to buy from so you somewhat know what you’re getting.

There is no reason for you to feel pressured into having a baby shower. If you’re just really not feeling it for the above reasons then don’t worry!

You might feel like you want one post-birth, which is okay too.

However, if you are unsure, then we hope that we’ve managed to settle your mind for you and you have a great time whatever you decide to do.
