There is nothing worse than double standards that show that there is one rule for them and another for us. We take a look at 10 of the most enraging double standards in modern society.
Parenting Facilities
There are lots of double standards when it comes to parenting, from maternity/paternity leave to the fact that men are deemed to “babysit” their own children. Nothing illustrated this more than bathroom facilities in public spaces where the changing table for babies is in the women’s facilities but not the men’s. There are some stores that have a family room but when places are left with a choice of where to put the changing table it is always the women’s.
Favoritism in the Workplace
We can often try our best at work by meeting our targets and pleasing our boss, but this can often be to no avail. When there is favoritism in the workplace it can be infuriating to see a colleague sit around and perform badly yet they still get the bonuses and the promotions. It is also infuriating when you perform 100% to your ability the majority of the time but when it is a 99% day you get criticized by your boss.
Men Are Seen as Weak for Crying
There are lots of double standards when it comes to the gender divide, none more so than when a man is seen as less of a man for crying. If a man dares to shed a tear he is ridiculed and told to “man up” but when a woman shows her emotions she is comforted. The view that boys don’t cry is harmful to their mental health but no matter how hard we try, this toxic masculinity is hard to shift.
Air Pollution
We are forever being criticized for the amount of pollution we are producing as the race to tackle climate change speeds up. While it is great that we are told of ways to slow down climate change, such as using renewable energy and reducing our consumption, it seems unfair that we feel guilty for the small impacts while big business has a far bigger impact. For most people, a yearly flight for a vacation is a treat yet we are made to feel bad for flying when businesses fly people short distances several times a week and major industries with huge factories have far bigger environmental impacts.
Political Behavior
Politics and double standards go hand in hand no matter which party you follow. Politicians often tell us what to do and how to act yet they seem to do whatever they want. When a politician is in the news, say for speeding or DUI, they seem to find an excuse and get away with punishment but the strong arm of the law comes down on the people that vote for such politician. A crime or misdemeanor should be so whoever commits it.
Office Etiquette
There is nothing more infuriating than being 5 minutes late for work due to no fault of your own and being penalized for it when you have been on time every other day of the year. It is even more annoying when you realize that you have worked at least 20 minutes after your shift ended three times that week.
Homemakers
When a woman is a homemaker she is raised for taking time out of her career to look after her family. Being at home to ensure that their children grow up with support and security is praised to no end when women say they are on a work sabbatical but it is not the same for men. When men say that they are a homemaker they are looked down upon for being unemployed or unable to secure a good job to look after their family.
Leaving your Job
If you have had enough of your job and simply cannot take any more, it is time to hand in your notice. The frustrating thing is that when you have your notice you will need to work your notice which is often around 4 weeks so that your employer has time to recruit for your role. However, when you get fired you just about have time to clear your desk, which does not seem fair.
Paychecks
When you notice that you have been underpaid and tell your employer you often have to wait weeks to be paid the money you are owed. However, if your payslip looks like you have been overpaid, your employer nags you to pay it back instantly, which shows how double standards work in the workplace, if you need to act quickly, so should they.
Dating
Men who date and sleep with a lot of women are praised for being a stud and a womanizer, getting a pat on their back from their friends. However, when a woman has several partners she is deemed to be problematic and is accused of not behaving how women should.
