Beyond Majesty: Unconventional Nicknames of the British Royal Family

Despite being one of the most renowned families globally, they share the same tradition as us when it comes to using nicknames. Each family member has their own endearing nickname, which we find rather adorable!

Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor

Lilibet is named after her late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, but Harry and Meghan made the decision from the beginning that Lilibet would be better known as ‘Lili’. 

Prince Louis

Princess Kate was heard calling Prince Louis, ‘Lou bug’ during a family visit to a Brownie Troop. It is also known that the youngest Wales’ siblings called him ‘Lou Lou’ when he was born, and it’s stuck ever since. 

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor

In 2019 during the Sussex’s meeting with Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Cape Town, Harry said to his son, “You’re going to meet Arch, Arch”, revealing a little nickname whilst referencing Desmond’s title.

Following a trip to Australia when he was just 2 years old, Diana gave William the sweetest nickname “wombat”. 

On another note, Princess Kate said that there was a nickname she gave her now-husband back when they were at university, and she said it was “Badly”, but even more cheekier, she would call him, “Big Willy.” 

Princess Charlotte

Princess Kate has revealed a really sweet name for her only daughter, and during a visit to Northern Ireland in 2019, an attendee said, “I said he is four and she said ‘oh, he’s the same age as Lottie’ – she calls her Lottie!” 

Prince Harry

During the Harry and Meghan docu-series on Netflix, the pair affectionately refer to each other and ‘H’ and ‘M’. It is also known that Meghan refers to Harry as ‘Haz’ or ‘My love’. It has been reported that Prince Harry’s friends called him ‘Spike’ for years. 

Prince George

A parent who had a child that went to Thomas Battersea, which is Prince George’s previous school, stated that his classmates call him ‘PG’. It has been reported that the name even passed on at home, and William and Kate have taken to calling their son ‘PG Tips’ or just ‘Tips’ after the tea. 

Princess Catherine

The only nickname that has been published for Catherine, and it was only during a 2017 interview and said by Prince Harry, is Cath. However, she is publicly known as Kate, which could also be classed as a nickname. 

Princess Beatrice and Eugenie

It was shared in an Instagram post in 2019 whilst celebrating her sister’s birthday, Princess Eugenie referred to her as BeaBea. This is super cute! 

Their mother, Sarah Ferguson, goes by ‘Fergie’ revealed that ‘Euge’ is one of Eugenie’s nicknames. 

Meghan Markle

As we already know, during the docu-series on Netflix, Meghan was referred to as ‘M’ by Harry. However, a new nickname that we never knew and it was called to her by King Charles, was ‘Tungsten’ which she was nicknamed for her resilience and toughness. 

Queen Elizabeth

We know that the late monarch’s nicknames from her great-grandchildren were ‘Gan Gan’ and ‘Granny’, and that she was referred to as ‘Lilibet’ by her grandparents, mother and father. However, Robert Lacey stated in a biography that Prince Philip would call her a more light-hearted nickname of ‘Cabbage’. 

King Charles and Queen Camilla

It has been public knowledge for a long time that the couple refer to each other as ‘Fred’ and ‘Gladys’. These names were reportedly based on the characters from The Goon Show. Although, Prince George has been known to call King Charles ‘Grandpa Wales’, which gives reference to his former Prince of Wales title.
