Uneven Breast Milk supply

It’s common for a breastfeeding mum to experience uneven milk supply at some point during their breastfeeding journey.

It seems to be that there are a few chosen few who are blessed with symmetrical breasts, whereas the rest of us have a normal difference in size between them both.

It is very common and when you’re breastfeeding, it becomes even more pronounced.

Although this might be humorous to some, it definitely isn’t when you’re the one to deal with it.

How to fix a Slacker breast?

There are many reasons as to why the lazy boob would produce less milk than the other.

Let me give you some insight into how to fix slacker boob.

1) Let your baby start feeding on your slacker boob first

Your baby is most hungry when they first start nursing.

This means that their sucking will be more rapid and stronger. It will encourage the let-down reflex more readily.

If you get the practice of starting on the slacker boob then you will notice an improvement in output.

however, remember to switch your baby to the other side to satiate their hunger.

Usually, most of the problem is mums breastfeed on the side which is easier for them.

This means, over time the milk supply on the other side will decrease.

2) For at least 5 minutes after a feeding session, pump from the underperforming breast.

It will give your breast the sensation that it should be producing more, but at first, it might not produce any milk.

You will see an improvement within a week or less if you do this a few times a day.

3) Power-pumping

This is a technique that mimics cluster feeding when a baby goes through a growth spurt.

You will be putting more demand on your breasts by increasing the pumping frequency in short increments.

10 min 10 min off for 60 min. Between 10am and 10pm for two days in a row, can encourage an increased supply in 48hours.

4. Drink more water

You won’t get anything from a dry water dispenser.

So, there is milk where there is water.

Your body is the dispenser and your milk is the water. To get good out, you must put good in.

You might be reading this article because you’re self-conscious about the off-balance life you’re living at the moment.

Or, you simply might want to figure out how to make your boobs more even.

It can be easily fixed if that’s what you’re looking for.

I know that pumping, expressing, and even breastfeeding as a whole can be painful, and the thought of extra pumping or expressing sends a shiver down your spine. Trust me it will be worth the extra effort.

5. How to increase milk supply in one breast

It’s quite easy to follow, and you’ll get into a routine.

Pump for 20 minutes and have a 10-minute break.

Pump for 10 minutes and have another 10-minute break.

Pump one last time for 10 minutes and then you’ll be finished.

This is the traditional power pumping schedule and you will just be pumping on the breast that is producing less milk.

Every time you resume the pumping, there may be another half an ounce or so waiting to be expressed and that’s the reason you pause in-between.

Every time you go through this strategy your lazy boob will begin to catch up.

6. Use Heat

Heat can promote the production and expression of breast milk.

If you take a hot shower before pumping and focus the flow onto your under-producing breast.

7. Use Vibration

If you use vibration on your breasts before and during your pumping session then it can dramatically increase the milk flow, trigger multiple letdowns and help eliminate clogs.

Mom can do jiggling of the breast, or you can use an electric massager on the breast.

How do you know you have one breast producing less milk?

Your baby might favor one breast over the other or put up a fight when you attempt to feed them off the breast which is producing less milk.

Not only that but quite simply look in the mirror, do you notice two different sizes when they are full?

It’s a simple forgetfulness that tends to get in the way.

You simply forgot which boob you last nursed on, and obviously, that confuses things when it comes to ensuring you do equal amounts of nursing on both breasts.

You can definitely put this down to baby brain. This is something I suffer from terribly knowing this may make you feel a bit better. I always forgot what side I last fed on until I started using a small pin to remind me.

What other reasons could explain my milk supply being off?

Anatomy

It might be something simple as having larger milk ducts in one breast rather than the other.

Or maybe you have a structural issue in one of your nipples which would cause problems for the baby to latch on.

Breast Injuries

Maybe you’ve had previous surgery or injury on one of your breasts which causes you to have a lower milk supply.

You might want to consult with your doctor to determine how this might affect your lactation process.

There may be nothing you can do except acceptance.

Positioning

There may be a preferred position that you breastfeed in, and that might be led on the one side of your body.

This is obviously going to be a bit difficult to change because as humans, we all love comfort and routine.

Just check your positions and make sure that you move slightly so the baby can reach both nipples.

Encourage many positions through the day.

Each time you feed on either breast change to football, cross cradle, or even sitting up, or leaning back.

This allows the baby to put pressure from the chin in different areas of the breast and can encourage more milk to be made with the extra pressure.

Baby preference

We all want what’s best for our babies, so when they begin to hysterically cry when you’re trying to get them to latch onto one breast, it causes discomfort for mum.

It’s okay, just relax, lie down and see if there is any other way your baby might prefer to suckle from the other breast.

Milk Supply Must-Haves

When we find out we’re pregnant and we’re going to start on our breastfeeding journey, we tend to go out and purchase anything and everything on the market to ensure that things are made easier and you have everything to hand.

I did the same, and it was completely unnecessary.

There are however a few things that are vital in my opinion The Milkology Breastfeeding class and the items below;

Let there be milk!

This is one supplement that I highly recommend and if I was only about to choose one supplement to work with, it would be this.

It has almost every single nutrient to make you a professional milk making machine!

Let there be milk drops take approximately 48 hours to get your extra supply but for this, I would usually take three full droppers.

It isn’t the tastiest of things, so please ensure you have water or squash to make it go down a bit easier.

It works so well that there will be times when you go to re-order and it will be out of stock.

so maybe try and get a few bottles to ensure you don’t run out when you need it the most.

Fenugreek

This is definitely one of the lowest cost supplements you can buy, so if you’re on a tight budget, this is the one to turn to.

Fenugreek is a natural herb that will increase prolactin levels and if you take it daily, you should notice a big improvement in just 72 hours!

It’s brilliant, but you may walk around smelling like maple syrup – which isn’t too bad. I can think of much worse smells.

Nursing Tea

Nursing tea in the morning is a go-to for many mums.

It should quickly become part of your morning routine, especially if you like to sit down for 5 before getting your day started.

There are two brands which work really well. Pink Stork’s Liquid Gold and Traditional Mother’s Milk.

They both taste the same and have amazing breastmilk boosting results.

Oatmeal

You should definitely try and find ways of building it into your daily diet routine because it works wonders.

Oatmeal also gives you all the energy you need to breastfeed or pump!

You might get sick of it but if you start noticing a difference then it should be worth it.

Flax Seeds and Brewers Yeast

If you’re deciding to build yourself a lactation smoothie then you need to add these two ingredients.

Keep these two ingredients handy because you never know when you’ll get a sweet tooth or when you’ll need something quick and easy.

Brewers Yeast

Flax seeds

Lactation Cookie Mix

Yes, that’s right! You can now even buy a cookie mix to help with your lactation.

How amazing. These taste just like normal cookies and offer the benefits of improving your milk supply.

What more could you ask for. Especially if you have the sweet tooth as I mentioned above.
