From on-set conflicts and turbulent productions to behind-the-scenes disputes, these elements are all part and parcel of Hollywood’s intricate dynamics. Instances have arisen where actors harbored such animosity toward one another that they outright refused to film scenes together. While some of the names below might be expected, others could genuinely catch you off guard.
Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte
“I Love Trouble” (1994)
Julia Roberts expressed a big disinterest in her co-star Nick Nolte. In fact, they both couldn’t stand each other, and Roberts famously described Nick as “disgusting”, and the worst person she’d ever worked with. In response to this, Nick said that Julia was “not a nice person”. So, because of their dislike towards each other, stand-ins were used as often as possible.
Wesley Snipes and the Supporting Cast
“Blade: Trinity” (2004)
When you have a whole successful franchise that you have to live up to, it can go straight to your head, and this is what happened to Wesley Snipes. He was given support in the form of Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel as Hannibal King and Nightstalkers Abigail Whistler. However, Wesley wasn’t keen on this and he also despised the script, the director and the overall story. In fact, he allegedly referred to Ryan Reynolds as “that cracker.”
Lena Headey and Jerome Flynn
“Game of Thrones”
You may not have noticed that these two don’t share any scenes, and if you did notice, you might’ve thought that it was a simple coincidence. However, it was an intentional production choice. These two had an off-screen romance years ago, but it didn’t end on good terms, and they weren’t on speaking terms when Game of Thrones was filmed. They actually won’t even appear in the same room together.
Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen
“Scary Movie 5” (2013)
As we’re all well aware, Charlie Sheen doesn’t have the best past with his well-documented sexual history and substance use. We understand why Lindsay Lohan didn’t want to kiss him during the filming of Scary Movie 5. However, with her own personal history, it’s another cause for concern. The scene ended up being reworked, and even though there was wild antics of their in-film sex tape, the kiss wasn’t missed.
Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts
“The Pelican Brief” (1993)If Denzel expresses his lack of readiness to film a specific scene, it should be taken seriously. Despite being an esteemed actor with numerous roles under his belt, he has seldom portrayed instances where he causes harm to a white woman on-screen. This is because he holds a deep respect for his black female fanbase and recognizes their underrepresentation as objects of sexual desire. Consequently, when faced with a script that required him to engage in a romantic moment with his co-star Julia Roberts, he declined, leading to the removal of the scene.
Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty
“Charmed” (1998-2006)
Even though they played siblings on TV for years, they actually ended up having a troubled relationship by the end of season three. Shannen’s character was killed off and she was replaced by a new half-sister. Shannen was said to have a bit of a reputation for being difficult to work with when she was on “Beverly Hills, 90210”. It was reported that the two actually didn’t talk unless the cameras were rolling, and it got to a point where a mediator was brought in, but it didn’t help.
Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel
“The Fate of the Furious” (2017)
You might have noticed a difference in the eighth Fast and Furious. There was very little interaction between Dwayne and Vin. Even though the both of them were clased as top actors, they do not work well together. They have actually gone on to acknowledge that they can’t stand each other. The Rock managed to avoid filming a single scene with Vin and the on set feud shows in the finished product.
Emma Watson and Channing Tatum
“This is the End” (2013)
These two had relatively small roles in this film, but they weren’t easy for Emma. During the movie, she made a notable in-film exit from the house, and apparently, she did leave the set as well. This was when she had a glimpse of the scene which involved Channing being on a leash in a thong dancing. The scene discussed sexual slavery and cannibalism, which was too much for Watson.
Naya Rivera and Lea Michele
“Glee” (2009-2015)
There were quite a few dramatic storylines in the musical series, but they usually went on to have a happy ending. However, it seems like the dramas weren’t just on-screen, but off-screen between Naya and Lea as well. No amount of singing could bring these two together again, and even though they might have played friends, and they began off the same, it soon turned sour and they stopped speaking.
Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi
“The Good Wife” (2009-2016)
This series was a hit, but there were some off-camera personalities that really classed and were less formidable. The lead, Julianna Margulies didn’t work well with Archie Punjabi. The two hadn’t shared a scene together since the middle of season 4, and even though the specifics are unclear, the two actors just simply couldn’t work together.
