Femme Faux Pas: The Comically Absurd Misunderstandings of Women in Movies

By Krystal Brown

While the movie industry is trying to break down stereotypes of women, here are 10 things that they continue to get wrong.

Running in Heels

Women indeed look great in high heels but some women cannot walk in high heels and never mind running in them. Even if a woman did become an expert in running in high heels it is not ideal as it will result in pain and long-term damage which we could all do without. The next time Hollywood wardrobe designers are writing for women, remember the sneakers!

Going to Bed With a Full Face of Make-up

When we watch movies in which a woman wakes up with a full face of makeup that has no signs of smudging, we know how unrealistic it is. Women would be covered in spots and have poor skin if they went to bed without removing their make-up and they certainly wouldn’t wake up like they just stepped out of a beauty salon. Women constantly having to be made up sets unrealistic expectations of women and that can put pressure on the women watching.

Waking Up With Perfectly Blown Hair

Just as women can wake up in perfect make-up in the movie world they can wake up with their hair perfectly blown. Unless they had a hairdresser maneuver them around the bed while they blow-dried their hair while they were asleep, we call it fake! Women love to see themselves represented in movies which include straggly hair that can often look like a burst pillow. In contrast, men will have messy bed-head that look sexy or cute, so women ask, why can’t this be the case for them?

Body Image

There are so many movie references in which girls who are skinny or at a healthy weight are deemed fat. Having unrealistic expectations of weight is damaging to women, especially those at risk of or recovering from an eating disorder. There have long been calls for Hollywood to accurately cast women who have a variety of body types so that every size is normalized and women are not pressured to hit a certain weight or look a certain way.

Superheroes Must Wear Skimpy Outfits

Male superheroes have nearly every part of their skin covered by protective layers of material and hard-wearing metals but these things are nowhere to be seen on women. Instead, women have skimpy layers of clothing that expose a lot of skin and do not look protective in any way. Think Halle Berry’s Catwoman and everyone who has played Wonder Woman, in which the directors thought less is more but women moviegoers simply shook their heads.

Fighting With Their Hair Down

Hollywood not only gets women’s clothing wrong in action films it also seems to want women to wear their long hair down while filming fighting scenes. Watch any female fight scene and you will be forgiven for thinking that women have magical hair that never gets in their eyes and will never fall away when a sharp sword whizzes past it. Ask any women how they wear their hair when doing something active and not many will say that they leave their hair down.

Teenage Girls That Look Like They Are in Their Twenties

There are so many teen films in which the main characters look like they are in their twenties. One of the main reasons for this is that casting directors cast women who are actually in their 20s but this is not a great look for the viewer. Teens need accurate representation when they are watching a movie and seeing women who could be their older sisters, and in some cases, their mom leaves them feeling off. Teens are also very impressionable and seeing a fully developed, mature woman playing a teenager can lead them to think that they are not developing at the same level as everyone else.

Perfect Birthing Stories

We have yet to see an accurate portrayal of a woman in labor as women in movies seem to have no trouble giving birth. It seems that women jump from a short pain or the breaking of their waters into their baby popping out within minutes. We have to give credit to Rachel from Friends who was in slow labor for a very long time but even this birth was not accurate in terms of what pain levels realistically look and feel like and everything always looks so clean with not a shot of blood or goo in sight.

Wearing Matching Lingerie at All Times

Matching lingerie is somewhat of a luxury for most women. Yes, women buy matching lingerie and they love the look of it when they finally get around to finding a matching set in the laundry but that is few and far between when you are met with a huge basket of washing and the sexy red knickers are nowhere to be found. Instead, women are pleased just to find a pair of knickers and bras that are clean and look good under their shirts.

Putting on Hand Lotion Before Bed

Bedroom scenes are not all about flimsy lingerie and perfect hair, we often see women completing their nighttime routine of putting moisturizing cream on their hands and elbows. Yes, women do like to do this but it is often when our hands are so dry they are about to crack or when they are not so exhausted that they have to collapse into bed.
