A user on Reddit recently asked, “It seems like a lot of people make a lot of money, and it seems like I’m missing out on something. So those of you that do, what’s your occupation that pays so well?” This thread had over 20,000 responses, and here are some of the unique careers that will earn you over $100K per year.

Millwright/Heavy Equipment Tech

A millwright installs and maintains heavy industrial equipment and machinery. You could make on average $63,000 per year, but with experience, you could be earning over $122,000 per year. 

Air Conditioner Repair – For Skyscrapers

A user commented, “I fix broken air conditioners. But the ones for skyscrapers and hospitals.” You might be familiar with ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) tech and typical heating, which are in your homes. Even though that career could also have you earning approximately $100K per year, if you specialise within commercial units then you will be earning even more. 

Trucking Agency

A Reddit user explained that he owned a trucking agency and this year, he had earned $320K which puts him in the position of making almost half a million dollars annually. It isn’t the same as long-haul truck driving, it is a trucking or freight agency that connects businesses which needs transportation of goods and shipping carriers. 

Lineman

A reddit user said, “I build and fix power lines and play with high voltage electricity.” You may have come across linemen repairing overhead lines or climbing up the side of a power pole. They specialise in working on high-voltage transmission lines. Another lineman added that you can make $150K-$250K per year. 

Horizontal Directional Drilling

$42 is the average hourly rate for a directional drilling technician. This can equate to approximately $87,000 per year. If you have more experience though, and you’re willing to work a bit of overtime, you can definitely surpass $100K per year. A horizontal directional driller is a specalised drilling operations drill in a non-vertical direction. It is usually used in oil and gas extraction. 

Travelling Nurse

“I know a travelling nurse that made $150K last year.” said one Reddit user. Nursing alone can be a lucrative career. Whereas, if you’re a travelling nurse, you can earn a lot more. If you’re willing to work with short-term contracts and travel all across the country, then you will get a significant pay rise. 

Insurance Sales

You don’t need much education for a sales opportunity to break into the six-figure mark for your career. One user said they make over $100,000 as an insurance salesperson and added, “Sales (in my case insurance), particularly if you don’t have a college degree/coding knowledge. A willingness to be rejected a lot is a requirement though and it’s a harder requirement than most people acknowledge.” 

Tow Truck Driver

“I drive a tow truck in metro Atlanta and clean up wrecks on I-285 & I-75. It’s a lot of hours, and being on call sucks especially working nights. But I’m at $100K so far this year.” Said one Reddit user. He added that he wishes to earn at least $160K by the end of the year. 

Union Elevator Mechanic

One person put on Reddit that he makes six figures as a union elevator mechanic, and when he was sent tons of questions about where people can get started, he replied with, “For everyone asking how to get into the trade, go visit NEIEP, and see when there is a recruitment near you, CEIEP, for those in Canada.”

Even though setting up a business can be a lot of work, it can only become successful if you put the work into it.
