Losing your job or, even worse, your career can be devastating. Redditors shared the hilarious and tragic ways they lost their jobs.
Biscuit Castles
One Reddit user told readers, “Built a castle out of Christmas chocolate biscuit boxes in the warehouse of a major retailer on a night shift and proceeded to fall asleep in it for a few hours.”
Bullying HR
In a cringeworthy post, one person admitted that he “Called the HR lady the “angel of death” to a coworker on chat. (HR was in a different state, so any time they came to town we all knew it was most likely to lay off people ). Angel of death came to get me shortly after!”
Gossiping
Another person said they were caught out talking about another employee. They wrote, “They told the manager about it. Got fired. The good part is it’s illegal, and the idiot created a paper trail around it. They settled out of court for way more than they would have been saved by people not talking about comp.”
Lunchbox Laxatives
One Redditor shared the story of a coworker who put laxatives in their lunchbox, not realizing that the lunchbox belonged to their boss. The boss ended up getting sick and having to leave work early, and the coworker was fired.
Bringing a Thermometer to Work
One person said they could no longer put up with the conditions at work and decided to do something about it. They said, “Not exactly a “career,” but I worked in a fast food spot that didn’t have any air conditioning, and there’s a workers law where I live that states once it gets to a certain temp in the building they legally can’t stay open. I brought a thermometer to work.” While this person’s colleagues would have been happy, their boss was not.
Petty Theft
Another Redditor shared the story of a coworker who was caught stealing small items from the office, such as pens and paper clips. The coworker was fired, and the theft also damaged their reputation in the industry.
Brandishing a Knife
One Redditor shared the story of a coworker who brought a knife to work and brandished it at another coworker during an argument. The coworker was fired and arrested.
Bad Camp Counselors
One man told readers that when he was in charge of a summer camp, two of the counselors were caught drinking beer. He said, “In an attempt to weasel his way out, one of them told the head of the camp that I gave him permission to do so.” Even though he had not given the people permission to drink, he was in trouble. He said, “ While I didn’t get fired on the spot, I was told I wouldn’t be asked back again for next year where there had already been talks of me being a full director in the future.
Internet Browsing
Lots of people said they were fired for looking at the internet while they should have been working. Once, a person said they were fired for “Browsing for another job while at the job,” which does sound bad, to be fair.
Sending The Wrong Person an Email
In a post that many people can relate to, one person spoke of sending an email to their boss in error. They wrote, “I wasn’t meant for my boss. To this day, I still have no idea what possessed me to put his name in the address bar. I noticed his name the exact moment I hit send. You have never felt that much panic.”
“Threatening” a Colleague with a Knife
In an unfortunate event, one man told of a time he was using a knife to open a mail package when his colleague came into the room. There were lots of hand gestures as they talked. The man told readers, “Sometime after the conversation, the Ops manager came down from his office and escorted me out of the building. Had forgotten the knife in my hand while talking with the secretary, and she made an accusation that I had threatened her with it during our conversation.” He was promptly fired and regrets losing his job over a misunderstanding with someone he had worked with for over a decade.
Standing up For What is Right
Many people said that they simply got fired for standing up for themselves. In one story, a man told of the time he stood up for himself “ one too many times,” this last being when he “texted a coworker about this and some shared concerns he had also talked about with me. The coworker showed my already angry boss my text. Bye-bye, job and career.” This seems very harsh when the person is trying to change the negative culture in his workplace.
