In the swiftly changing realm of celebrity, even renowned figures are susceptible to errors and encountering public criticism, resulting in situations where they are confronted and obliged to offer apologies.
Rihanna
October 3rd 2020 saw Rihanna launch a new Savage X Fenty fashion show that streamed on Amazon prime. However it faced a huge backlash from the Muslim community for her choice of soundtrack. The soundtrack contained a song with an Islamic hadith (a saying quoted from the holy Prophet, used for guidance), and was used in the background of her lingerie fashion show, in an overtly sexualised manner. The singer later apologized on Instagram, stating in a written apology the incident was a “careless” yet “honest” mistake.
Hailey Bieber
The Rhode beauty founder came under scrutiny after being called out on TikTok by a waitress for being a poorly mannered customer. The TikToker rates her experiences with celebrity customers and Bieber was given a mediocre 3.5/10. She was labelled “not nice” after meeting her a handful of times as she was rude and had a terrible attitude towards staff . Hailey later apologized in the comments section saying she was “so sorry” and it was “never her intention” to have a bad attitude.
Ariana Grande
Celebrities are often called out for entitled behavior, and this incident in July 2015 is no different. Grande came under fire after being caught in a bakery on surveillance licking a donut before replacing it back without purchasing it. The singer later apologized after the footage was leaked and stated she was “disgusted with herself” and the whole incident was a “rude awakening”.
Vanessa Hudgens
The Covid-19 outbreak was a period of unrest, with vast uncertainty and widespread fear becoming prevalent among many people. So it comes as no surprise that insensitive comments made by Hudgens were immediately called out. Stating that Covid-19 deaths are “inevitable”, she was forced to apologize stating the situation was a “wake up call” and her words were “ not at all appropriate for the situation our country and the world are in right now”.
Adam Levine
The “Girls Like You” singer faced a scandal a little closer to home, with flirty messages to a woman being exposed while his pregnant wife Behati Prinsloo was preparing to give birth to their third child. After more women spoke out also claiming to have inappropriate messages from the singer, Levine quickly published a statement, declaring whilst he “did not have an affair” he exercised “poor judgement”. The exchange still went down as a cheating scandal and his public image remained tarnished for some time.
Kristen Stewart
The Twilight star is best remembered for her role as Bella Swan, a teen who has a romance with the vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattiston). To the surprise of no one, their onscreen chemistry quickly translated into real life. However what no one expected was Stewart being caught kissing the director Rupert Sanders. The cheating scandal, whilst being unexpected, has had detrimental effects, leading to the divorce of the director and the split between Pattison and Stewart. Issuing an apology, Kristen stated she was “deeply sorry” and had “jeopardized the most important” thing in her life.
Lea Michele
This Glee star was accused of hypocrisy, racism and extremely bad behavior on set. The heavy accusations came after her tweets in support for Black Lives Matter, was met with condemnation by her fellow Glee star, Samantha Marie Ware, who accused Michele of making her life “a living hell”, as well as making derogatory remarks about Ware’s wig. The accusation was followed by more co-stars coming out to further accuse Michele of bad behaviour. However her apology was not deemed acceptable by everyone, as she claimed she would “ be better in the future from this experience”.
Wendy Williams
Williams has been labelled a very controversial figure throughout her career, and this incident proved that statement in full. Calling actor Joaquin Phoenix “oddly attractive” whilst making crude gestures, alluding to the supposed cleft lift which actually was confirmed by the actor to be a birthmark. After facing backlash from numerous people including singer Cher, Williams apologized and made a donation to the charity Operation Smile and the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association.
Bob Iger
An elementary school fundraiser was under fire for showing Disney’s live action “ The Lion King” without a licence. The school was then fined $250. Iger, Disney’s executive chairman at the time, issued an apology via Twitter, and promised to “personally donate to their fundraising initiative”.
Anne Hathaway
First gracing our screens as the lovable Mia Thermopolis, it’s hard to imagine Hathaway being called out to apologize. However that’s exactly what happened after the release of her HBO Max movie ‘The Witches’. Hathaway portrays the character the Grand High Witch, which came under criticism for its negative portrayal of limb disfigurement. The character has only 3 fingers on each hand which coincides with the congenital disorder ectrodactyly. The film negatively stereotypes disabilities, which Hathaway and the filmmakers later apologized for. Taking to Instagram Hathaway concludes “Now that I know better I promise I’ll do better”.
Justin Timberlake
After Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel got married in 2012 the two have had an ideal marriage that is still going strong even now. They have two young sons and were labelled Hollywood sweethearts for years. However every marriage is bound to have some ups and down and this one is no different. Justin Timberlake was caught getting cosy with co-star Alisha Wainwright on a New Orleans Balcony. The photo started a massive controversy that forced Timberlake to apologize to his wife and fans saying ‘ I drank way too much that night and I regret my behavior’.
Kevin Hart
When Kevin Hart was younger he took to twitter with some Homophobic comments. However he didn’t receive any backlash until he became famous and the LGBT community called him a number of years later. Because of these sudden accusations Kevin Hart dropped out of his position as host and apologized multiple times for his hurtful comments.
