A mother creates distance between her and her daughter after she tells the fourteen year old that she is “average-looking”.
The woman explains that her daughter who is fourteen has an unhealthy obsession about her looks. Often avoiding mirrors and pictures because her mood will drain instantly when she sees herself.
Inside and Out
Her daughter will constantly ask her and her husband if she is pretty. They will always tell her the same thing. That she is beautiful both inside and out.
She understands that this is a phase that most teenage girls go through. Having gone through it herself. However, she is becoming increasingly concerned. As her daughter’s vanity is not only becoming exhausting to those around her, but she fears that her daughter is losing herself.
One night she sat her daughter down to have a chat. Wanting to discuss what might be wrong with her. She also wanted to see if her daughter would be willing to see a therapist.
At first her daughter did not want to speak with her about it. With her growing concerns she pressed the issue. Finally her daughter agreed after she insisted she talk.
A few minutes into the conversation, her daughter wanted to ask a question. Asking her mother to be completely honest with her. No sugarcoating. This is when the horrible truth came out.
She explains to her mom that the kids at her school think that she is ugly. With the other kids bullying her. Telling her she looks like a bird because of her nose.
Tell The Truth Or Lie
This is where she asks her mom “are you telling me the truth when you say I’m beautiful? Or do you lie”. Her mother claims that she is an honest person. So she did not want to “lie” to her daughter. Giving her the most “honest” answer she had.
She told her daughter that she looks average, “like most people are”. Promising that it is not a bad thing to have an average looking appearance. Her daughter got up from her seat and left. Not saying a word as she went to her room, not coming out for the rest of the night.
She says her daughter has been distant ever since their talk. Thinking that she upset her, and trying to claim that it wasn’t her intention at all.
There has been no update to this situation. She also has not responded to comments from readers as she received a large amount of backlash. With most inquiring about what she planned to do now that she knows her daughter is being bullied.
She Will Remember This
Readers also comment on how instead of staying consistently supportive of her daughter, she chose to call her average-looking. Telling her that her daughter will most likely remember that as her mothers response to when she opened up forever.
