A woman brings her sister-in-law’s wallet with her to a restaurant they went to, since her sister-in-law always conveniently “forgets” it.
Visiting
A twenty-eight-year-old woman has a sister-in-law named Amy, who is twenty-six. Amy frequently visits her and her husband from out of town. Whenever she visits, she always wants to go to an expensive restaurant.
Forgetful
She always obliges by taking Amy to the restaurant she wants to go to. However, Amy always conveniently ends up “forgetting” her wallet. If she doesn’t forget it, she will come up with an excuse as to why she can’t pay for her share.
“You Should Pay”
Amy has always implied that, since her sister-in-law makes more money than her, she should be the one to pay. Though she does make a decent amount, she does not make enough to treat someone to dinner every time they come into town.
“Pay Me Back”
Nonetheless, she has always paid for Amy, telling her that it was fine and just paid the bill, letting Amy know that she can always just pay her back. Amy never has.
Reservation
One night, Amy booked reservations at an extremely expensive restaurant. Before they left together, she made sure to make it clear to Amy that she would not be paying her bill.
Wallet
As they were leaving, Amy and her husband went to the car. She pretended that she had forgotten something, going back inside to find Amy’s wallet, which was sitting on top of her suitcase.
Separate Bills
She put the wallet into her purse before going with them to the restaurant. When they were done eating, she asked for separate bills.
“This Wallet?”
When asking for separate bills, Amy spoke up, telling her once again no, and that she forgot her wallet. Reaching into her purse, she took the wallet out, showing it to Amy. “This wallet?”
“My Wallet!”
Amy became extremely furious, saying that she should not have touched or grabbed her wallet.
Boundaries
Without going into much detail, it’s revealed that her husband has always been expected to pay for nice things for his female family members. After getting together with his wife, she has worked with him to start cutting down dinners/outings as the bills piled up over time.
Therapy
They have been to therapy due to this, as his family continues to try and pressure him into giving them more of his money. After addressing the issue, he has learned to set boundaries. However, when it comes to Amy and her restaurant shenanigans, he hasn’t set boundaries yet. This is the reason things have escalated so far.
Fallout
Amy responded to them calling her out on this behavior, claiming that she has always “singled out” Amy since she pays for her biological sisters without saying a word. She also claimed that ever since she and her husband have gotten married, he’s stopped helping them financially altogether because he’s become “cheap.”
“My Sisters Are in University”
She explained to Amy that the reason she always pays for her sisters is due to them being in university, telling her they are working very hard for their future careers. Meanwhile, Amy is an adult who is financially capable of paying for herself.
Kids and a Mortgage
She also explains that the reason her husband is “cheap” now is that they have kids and a mortgage to take care of. Due to the insults Amy has thrown her way and the claims of her “having money to waste,” she will no longer be taking Amy out to dinner, nor will she be welcome back into their home, at least for a while.
