A young lady recently posted on Reddit’s popular ‘Am I The A**hole (AITA)’ community explaining that her family had stolen inheritance money left to her in a savings account by her late great-aunt. It starts off with explaining that in the original posters (OP)’s culture, education for women is uncommon / unappreciated. Not being valued in their society. Her great-aunt thought that this was absurd.
From London to America
OP’s Great-Aunt previously lived with her father in London. This was where she was also educated. She attended University, going on to become a doctor and marry a British man. The couple then moved to America where they had a great life together.
Funds For Family
Along their journey, the Great-Aunt funded the education of as many of her nieces and grand nieces as possible. When she later passed away, she left money to every female relative that she could.
Saving Account Troubles
This is where the trouble begins; OP states that her parents also had access to the accounts that were set up for both her and her sister. Without OP’s knowledge, her parents went out of their way to take out funds from these bank accounts.
Misused Funds
These funds were originally meant to be put towards their education. Instead, she comes to find out they used it to fund their brother’s wedding only after graduating. Realizing that almost all the money was gone and that only $13,000 of it was left.
Family Rivalry
Once OP had found out what her parents had done, she became furious. When confronting her parents about what they had done, they claimed that they “needed” that money to pay for the wedding for her brother.
OP Moves Out
OP had become so distraught she proceeded to take out student loans, moving out soon after. She feels that to her family, she is a great source of shame now. However, she could care less. For they had completely betrayed her trust.
Making Demands
Fast forwarding to today, she is now suing her parents. Demanding that they replace the money that was left for her. Distraught, they claim that she is being unreasonable. Using her sister as an example stating how “she didn’t care” due to her sister getting married two years out of High School. With her sister not attending college for herself.
Dirty Laundry
They are especially angry towards her claiming that she is airing private family business in public. Putting money before her family. She does however have friends, all of which are on her side. Reassuring her that she is right to be taking legal action.
Brother Offers To Pay Up
After this incident and the fall-out that ensued, her brother eventually called her with an offer. He stated that he would pay for her University. However she would have to drop the lawsuit. OP reluctantly agreed under one condition: that it had to be a legally binding contract.
Mistrust
Her brother stated that she was wrong to not trust him. She shot back that he should never have accepted her money to pay for his wedding in the first place. Ultimately she feels ashamed to be doing this, but she does not want to have a debt that she should not have.
Social Media Blows Up
This post blew up on social media. With over 4k comments. In the OP’s responses she reveals that she is getting help from her University. Saying that she is apparently not the first student to encounter this problem.
How Much Was Really Stolen?
When users inquire about how much was stolen, she doesn’t say an exact number. However she does say that it was “enough that both my sister and I could have finished our undergraduate degrees without debt”. Which in today’s society comes out to a huge amount.
No Update Yet
Due to legal reasons, there was never an update to this thread. Being posted 8 months ago. All users can do is hope that justice was served and that OP had won the case. Getting the money back that was rightfully left to her.
