Everyone has had a fair share of terrible experiences while dining out. There are some hints that we most obviously overlook. These are the so-called unhealthy restaurants’ red flags that we find regrettable. I’ve been in this scenario countless times. To ensure you don’t regret your next restaurant visit, I bring to you red flags you should look out for in a restaurant before you dine. Let’s dive in.
Pungent or Bad Odor

The unpleasant odor that filled some restaurant dining areas is unbelievable. This indicates poor hygiene due to an uncleaned kitchen, poor cooking conditions, and poor ingredients. In some cases, this might be caused by poor ventilation and unclean toilet space. This is undeniably a restaurant red flag that screams run to your head. The funniest part is that these culpable restaurants are littered across Vegas. They are fancy outlets with glamorized ceilings made with exotic lighting and chandeliers. Just keep off such restaurants for your own sake.
Cockroach Infestation

You might be surprised by the scurrying around cockroaches in your choice of restaurants. This is a big red flag that most people overlook. Imagine going on a date night with your friends and ending up with diseases like Dysentery, Typhoid, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Gastroenteritis, and Salmonella. Regardless of how posh and tasty the restaurant portrays, this single ilk is a red flag big enough to ditch such a restaurant. Cleanliness standard is one of the hallmarks of a restaurant. Some restaurants deviate from this standard under the guise of emphasizing other priorities. This deviation has been observed to be a significant problem in their housekeeping protocol. I advise you always to run anytime you see cockroaches in any restaurant.
Unnecessarily Long Menu

This is one of the most common shows of incompetence you can encounter in a restaurant. It is unusual to be presented with a long menu upon arriving at the restaurant. Trust me, this is one of the most profound red flags that screams run upon dining. I have my reasons for this based on my experience. You’ll agree that a restaurant’s menu should include local and international food names, prices, and descriptions. Some restaurants lack quality meal planners, and chefs have led them to add unnecessary meals to their menus. This is a sign of incompetence and what I’ll call a jack of all trades, master of none. This is a red-flag restaurant that will leave you with low-quality food.
Heavy Sauce in Their Foods

Some restaurants in America lacks quality meal planner and chef. This is evident whenever your food is served with excessively heavy sauce. Most of us have fallen into this trap in the past, and we often normalize them. This is an unworthy precedent that we shouldn’t get used to. Imagine lumping your pasta with a thick blanket of sauce. Even Italian restaurants have learned to use this in small quantities. It’s a restaurant red flag that most Americans are unaware of. In a nutritional sense, sauce contains high amounts of sodium, sugar, fat, and salt. Excessive intake of these are damaging to the health.
Dirty Restroom

Restaurant restroom is one of the most common ways to identify their level of hygiene. Just imagine unsanitary practices in the kitchen when a restaurant failed to take care of its restroom. There is no justification for dirty toilets. Everyone knows the hazards of stinking the room, ranging from bad smells that pollute the dining area to health hazards to customers. Inadequate maintenance of the restroom is a restaurant red flag. You should always look at the restaurant restroom before even painting down, let alone placing your order.
Choice Location but Low Customer

It’s human nature to patronize where they find quality. If you go to the best restaurant in town and you don’t see anyone eating there, that’s a red flag. You might wonder if other factors like low PR, timing, and season cause the low patronage. Regardless of these factors, food is a critical component of the human race that people can’t do without. There’s no other reason a restaurant in a premium location would have zero patronage if not for the poor service and quality of food they offer. This is a severe restaurant red flag that you can’t overlook.
The Menu Is Full of International Cuisine

This is akin to having a long, long-listed menu. I’ve learned over the years of visiting restaurants in America that little details matter. Any restaurant that boasts of being well rounded and having a chef that cooks every international meal is among the so-called res flag restaurants that scream run. This is a sign of zero specialization, to the detriment of their culinary skill. For instance, Chinese cuisine is prepared in Chinese restaurants. It’s a red flag if any American restaurant has such dishes. I’ll attribute this to a lack of organization in their kitchen and a poorly designed restaurant standard.
Employees Are Unable to Answer Necessary Inquiries

A well-run restaurant features competent staff. Imagine asking questions about their seafood’s origin; all you got was a stuttering response from the restaurant staff. Or you ask about the steak meat USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) grade and compliance, and they failed to muster any coherent response to your questions. This is one of the worst red flags in a restaurant. It doesn’t get worse than this one because every restaurant staff must know the details that set them apart.
“We Serve Kobe Beef” on the Menu

Not everyone knows the difficulty you’ll have to overcome before getting a pound of Kobe beef. These Japanese Wagyu exclusive types of beef remain famous due to their tenderness and vibrant flavor. Kobe beef is often regarded as the most expensive beef on earth due to its strict and precise production standard from the rarest Japanese-raised Tajima cattle breeds. Any restaurant with this type of beef on their menu must have a complete idea of how they procure them and their preparation processes. Ensure you take your leave if they fail to provide evidence of the need for quality assurance. Most American restaurants are selling American Wagyu, which is of low quality compared to the original Japanese.
Extremely Low Price

You know you are in for the shock of the century when a restaurant prices their white gold caviar or bluefin tuna at a lower price than their market value. It’s a too-good-to-be-true occurrence that gives you a replica of the classic ones. Some American restaurants are culprits of this dark art style. It’s not logical to sell an Iberico Ham of $4,500 at a lesser price. If you are getting such, have it at the back of your mind that you are getting a replica or something of lower quality.
Not Busy But Slow Service

The sign of a great restaurant mostly revolves around service time. Imagine waiting hours before the waitress brings you their menu, takes your order, and serves your food. This can be excusable if the restaurants have an extended reservation that keeps them busy. But what about restaurants without such that their service time is taking forever? This is a red flag in any restaurant and an unpleasant experience that results in loss of appetite and turns your cravings into discomfort.
Vague Food Description

Most people have been caught up in misidentifying the food they want. This is due to the ambiguity of the food description in the restaurant’s menu. The Menu list is essential information that every restaurant must ensure conciseness and clarity. But, this is not an easy feat for most of them due to a lack of knowledge and requisite expertise. Any restaurant with a vague food description is not worth your penny.
