A woman thinks about not telling her boyfriend, who she has only been dating for a month, about her plans to be a single mother through artificial insemination.
Single Mother By Choice
Prior to the lockdown caused by Covid-19, a woman decided that she would be a single mother by choice. The journey to her accepting this took two years including counseling. Ensuring that this was something that she could do alone.
She was happy with this decision. Being at a good place in life she realized that her desire to be a mother was stronger than her desire for waiting to have a partner. With her fertility declining she chose to go down this path as a solo woman.
Before she was due to have artificial insemination with a doner, the pandemic hit. This caused her treatments to be canceled with no timeline as to when her clinic would reopen. She was devastated. But as time went on she picked herself up, deciding to park her plan.
She downloaded a dating app out of curiosity. Figuring that she could chat with guys without any expectations. This is where she met her boyfriend who she’s been speaking to for a month.
They were still in a very early stage of their relationship. Meeting up twice while also speaking on the phone. For the first time in years she felt an emotional connection that felt natural and promising.
During this time her clinic contacted her explaining that they had approval to open. Asking if she wished to go ahead with her treatment in a month’s time. Wanting to be a mother more than ever she said yes.
She was conflicted about telling her boyfriend of her plan. A friend gave her a piece of advice saying that if she told him now that she may sabotage things between them prematurely. Suggesting she waits until he gets to know her better.
Communication Is Key
Though she was conflicted she went ahead with telling him of her plan. This wasn’t something that he expected, but nonetheless he supported her decision. With the two now being in a more committed relationship. With her honesty being the reason he grew to admire her and reassess his own future to realize he also wants children.
Fourteen months afterwards she commenced fertility treatment in June. Eventually after failed treatments she switched to IVF. She got the news from her clinic that October that she had fallen pregnant. With her boyfriend being thrilled for her.
Three months into her pregnancy their country went into a strict lockdown. During this time her boyfriend moved back home to help take care of his mother. They continued their relationship long-distance finding ways to keep things alive.
It’s A Boy
In the last few months of her pregnancy her boyfriend moved back to her city. They continued things where they left off. She soon gave birth to a son who he describes as an extension of her.
She moved in with her mother after having the baby. Her mother was skeptical at first of her boyfriend claiming that the whole thing was unconventional. But after meeting him she grew to accept him. With him playing a fatherly role in her son’s life.
