Her Sister Gets Unnecessary Surgery, but When She Refuses to Take Care of Her She is Branded Selfish

By Emma Williams

A young woman frustratingly looked for backup online recently when her sister accused her of being selfish for not taking care of her. Speaking to readers of an online forum the 29-year-old explained that her sister is about to have surgery for a rib removal, so she will need help with her post-surgery recovery.

The Surgery is in Another Country

The surgery is to be performed in America as the sister’s country of origin will not perform the surgery for her. While the sister will receive immediate care in America, she will require support when she gets back home, which is expected to last around four months.

The Woman is a Critical Care Nurse

The main reason the sister wants the poster to look after her is that she is a critical care nurse, so she has the skill set needed for surgery recovery. It is also noted that the sisters’ parents are too old to look after their daughter, and they live in an over-50s complex, so it is not likely possible for the sisters to stay there anyway.

Space Would be Tight

The woman tells readers that she only has a one-bedroom apartment, so there is only a little space for them both to live together for such a long time. The woman also says that she works long hours caring for people and does not want to have to come home and carry on being a carer.

The Sister is Angry

The sister is very angry at the woman for not looking after her when she is in need of care and says she will need to pay to bring nurses in. The woman says that while she feels for her sister, it is not her problem if she does not want to care for her in her home.

The Sister Should Have Thought About Care Expenses

Reddit fans supported the sister by saying she is not the a**hole as her sister should have thought more carefully about her aftercare. One person said, “If she can fly to America and pay for medical care there, she can afford a nurse to look after her.” Another person was brutal when they said, “Your reasons for not wanting to be a caregiver are very valid. And if your sister can travel to America for surgery she can afford caregivers. She sounds stingy and selfish.”

Where Did The Sister Expect to Sleep?

Other posters were concerned about what expectations the sister had in terms of sleeping arrangements. One person wrote, “does her sister plan to recover on the living room sofa, or does she expect OP to give up her own bedroom for months to camp in the living room, all while working full-time?

”People Questioned Why The Sister Needed Surgery

The fact that the surgery could not be done in her home country made leaders think that the surgery was for purely cosmetic reasons. One person wrote, “Wow, rib removal surgery, now that is the height of unnecessary cosmetic surgery.” Others did jump in to say that sometimes people require rib surgery for comfort rather than just looks, saying, “There are a lot of medical reasons to remove ribs’. Still, the fact that she had to travel to get it done says that it was not a necessity.

Some People Were Confused by The Recovery Time

While there was debate about the reason the woman was having surgery, some people were more concerned about why she needed four months to recover. One person questioned the sister’s logic: “ Why does she need months of in-home care?”

Advice From a Nurse

Another, who was a nurse, said, “Something’s missing because CABG patients are up ambulating within 24 hours. I’ve had trauma patients ejected from and rolled over by vehicles not needing that much time with an in-home caregiver.” This led some people to think that the sister was more needy than she should be and maybe manipulating her family. There Was

Empathy for The Sister

There was an outpouring of empathy for the poster as people thought her sister was selfish. One person said, “You already have a grueling (PAID) job that takes all of your time.” Another said, “You can’t possibly take care of her.. It must be within her power to locate a substitute. It irritates me too, all those strangers. Her luxuries shouldn’t put a strain on her family.”

The Sister is Spoiled

Others made the point that the poster should stand her ground with her sister, with one person writing, “I expect this is a person who just wants to be spoiled for a while, and who is ignorant enough to think that a critical care nurse is going to come home from work and spoil her.”
