The Top 10 Most Bizarre and Insincere Celebrity Apologies

By Krystal Brown

There are some celebrities that have apologized for their mistakes but instead just made things a lot worse.

Matt Damon

It took his daughter to write him a full essay letting him know that using homophobic slurs was a bad thing. Matt said, “I made a joke, months ago, and got a treatise from my daughter. She left the table. I said, ‘Come on, that’s a joke! I say it in the movie ‘Stuck on You!’ She went to her room and wrote a very long, beautiful treatise on how that word is dangerous. I said ‘I retire the f-slur!’ I understood.”

Doja Cat

There was a time when Doja Cat tried to apologise for her problematic, anti-gay language, and this is what she classed as an apology. “I called a couple people faggots when I was in high school in 2015 does this mean I don’t deserve support? I’ve said faggot roughly like 15 thousand times in my life. Does saying faggot mean you hate gay people? Do I hate gay people? I don’t think I hate gay people. Gay is okay.” We don’t think this makes the cut as a good apology.

Mark Wahlberg

Mark stated that spending a short time of 45 days in prison made him turn his life around. However, 45 days out of a 2 year sentence for a racially motivated hate crime isn’t enough, in our opinion. Mark said, “It made it 10 times more difficult to walk from my home to the train station, to go to school, to go to work. But I also prided myself on doing the right thing and turning my life around. I would hope that people would be able to get a second chance in life.”

Gina Rodriguez

Gina took to Twitter to give a great non-apology after she was called out for singing the N-word in her story. She said, “Hey, what’s up everybody? I just wanted to reach out and apologize. I am sorry. I am sorry if I offended anyone by singing along to The Fugees – to a song I love – that I grew up on. I love Lauryn Hill, and I really am sorry if I offended you.”

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

Johnny and Amber took to Twitter to apologize for not declaring their dogs when they entered Austrailia. There are strict biosecurity laws around this, in a video Amber said, “Austrailia is a wonderful island with a treasure trove of unique plants, animals and people.” It was said extremely flatly, and then Johnny added, “It has to be protected.” Very awkward.

Ellen DeGeneres

There were a lot of reports made against Ellen in 2020 about a toxic work environment, including a misconduct to thrive. Ellen tried her best at an apology during season 18, and she did this through jokes, which was met by laughter and applause from a virtual audience. However, this didn’t go down well with her staff at the time, and they thought that her apology was in too much of a light-hearted tone to be heartfelt.

Will Smith

In 2022, Will caused quite a controversy during the Oscar’s ceremony when he hit Chris Rock across the face after Chris made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. It wasn’t long after the incident that Will took to the stage to give a teary-eyed apology, but he made this apology to everyone, except the person he’d slapped. The following day, Will posted a statement to acknowledge his wrongdoing and pleaded directly to Chris.

Logan Paul

During a trip to Aokigahara forest in Japan, Logan Paul was filming a vlog when they came across a gentleman who had apparently taken his own life. Logan decided to film this and then later uploaded it to his YouTube channel. This video gained over 6 million views, but Logan later removed the video after complaints, and he then took to Twitter to apologize. During the apology, he referenced himself more than 20 times and seemed to stress how important and extensive his influence was.

Kevin Spacey

The Hollywood actor Anthony Rapp was granted an interview in 2017 with Buzzfeed. During this interview, he alleged that Kevin Spacey had harassed him when he was a teenager. Kevin took to Twitter and apologized for what he termed “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior” but then in a turn of events, the “House of Cards” actor came out as gay. Many people thought that this was a deflect from his actions and the allegations made against him. Since then, more accusations of inappropriate behavior have come flooding in.
